Major folks in India are struggling to cast away casteist mould of their false  historic origins and some of their deities. New school of thoughts are developing with regards to  this mainly due to growing awareness and desire to revive buddhism,in land of its own origin. They are, may be here to make a dent  According to these schools some of deities, shrines and cults are believed to have Buddhist connection. Balaji of Tirupati and Vitthala of  Pandharpur are amongst such propositions .They are  lost buddhas in Indian pantheon worshipped and need to be rediscovered. Vitthala is a heart throb deity of  Maharashtrian folks. Vitthala has been occupation of minds of  worshippers for many centuries. Vithoba and its cult stands out compared to other deities. It’s idol is without any weapons in its hands, primarily suggesting non-violent face of the cult. It thus leaves one surprised and think that feature wise  it is different. Vitthala may be lost Buddha yet to be uncovered by catching on trail lost. Even Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar had began working over proving this proposition. It went cold with his sad demise.So it is now more fulfilling to search this lost Buddha and pay tribute to our father of modern India. Study of who was Vitthala and was he a historical person  is most fascinating. New theories are constantly coming up and old ones are  being reshaped. Attitudes of  most about old belief  that Vitthala  is a  non-buddhist deity is now challenged than it was ever  before. Lost Buddha –Vitthala beckons intellectuals.
